Choking Hazards at Christmastime

Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. It’s filled with beautiful decorations, delicious treats, and Christmas presents. Even though all of these things make Christmastime wonderful, they can pose a major danger to your children. Here are a few of the items that can present a problem for your young children and how to prevent them from choking on any of these items.

·       Check the suggested age range for the toys you are purchasing, ensuring that they are appropriate for their ages. Encourage others to buy age appropriate toys for your child or buy them yourself. If your child receives a toy that has potential choking hazards or is not age appropriate, you can put the toy away until your child is old enough, return it for something more age appropriate, or donate the toy to a child in need.

·       This also goes for Christmas treats as well as toys. There are many great treats to be had during the holiday season. Your child is as likely to choke on food as a toy. Never leave your small child eating by themselves. Always make sure their food is cut up in small pieces and be sure to teach them the importance of chewing their food. Never rush them while they are eating and make sure they are sitting up straight when eating.

·       Christmas decorations are another potential holiday choking hazard. Christmas lights- especially the bulbs, ornaments, and many other items maybe be small enough for your child to fit into their mouths when you are not looking.

·       Prevent your child from choking on anything by watching over them while they are eating, playing with toys (especially if they have small parts), or in the presence of any type of small decoration or household item. It is best if you remove any choking hazards from spots that your child can easily access, but if that is not possible, you must observe your child to prevent them from choking.

·       Encourage your children never to put strange objects in their mouth. It is important to model good eating habits, like sitting up straight and chewing properly.
Following these tips will help keep your children safe which will ensure a Happy Holiday Season. Keep your emergency numbers handy not only during the holidays but at all times. Erring on the side of caution is always better when it comes to the safety of your family and loved ones.
