Preventing Sports Injuries
With the new school year quickly approaching, your young one may be soon joining a sports team or participating in some kind of extracurricular activity. Exercise is an important part of your children aging. It helps them to remain healthy and happy as well as prevent obesity. Sports injuries are common among children and teens. The most important thing about sports safety is prevention. Here are a few ways your child can participate in their favorite sports while also preventing any injuries from occurring.
Physical Checkup – It is quite common for schools to require students to get a sports physical before they can participate in any sports. This is a great way to prevent injuries, as your pediatrician will be able to make sure your child is in a good physical state to play any particular sport. Your pediatrician may also check your child’s joints, bones, and muscles as well as their vision, weight, hearing and more. They will be able to determine which sports are appropriate for your child by assessing their strengths and weaknesses.
Another part of preventing sports injuries is making sure your child has the proper safety gear. All safety gear and equipment used by your child should be in good working condition and once damaged should be replaced to prevent injuries from occurring. Different sports will require different gear and equipment. Always be aware of the things your child needs to safely participate in their favorite sports.
It is imperative that your child remains hydrated while participating in their sport. While participating in sports, sweating occurs. Drinking fluids before, during, and after intense sports activity will replenish your child and replace the fluid lost when sweating. This will prevent your child from getting sick or having any heat-related injuries or illnesses such as heat stroke or heat cramps. Be sure to know the signs of dehydration and be active in preventing it by encouraging your children to hydrate constantly.
Following these simple steps will help your children to remain active and allow them to participate in their favorite sports while also preventing sports or heat-related injuries to occur.
